In June 2015, Dr. Carlo La Vecchia, professor of epidemiology at the University of Milan in Italy, presented his study at the EuroPRevent session report by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee. The results of this multi-study review whowed that drinking 3-5 cups of coffee a day decreased the risk of dying from heart disease by 21%.
A lot of research has been done on the contents of coffee and their effects on health. Caffeine, which was used to be believed as harmful, now appears to be one of the major active principles of coffee responsible for the health benefits. Aside from caffeine, coffee also contains an array of antioxidants, flavonoids, and alkaloids. Together, they have been shown to reduce the risk for diabetes, anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s, certain types of cancer. They have also demonstrated contribution in the improvement muscle performance, memory, and attention.
